Early History


The legacy of The Official Catholic Directory spans over two centuries of unbroken institutional record-keeping, tracing its origin back to 1817 with the publication of the first national church register, the annual Metropolitan Catholic Calendar and Laity’s Directory. This established the definitive timeline for tracking the structural expansion of the Catholic Church in America. Parallel to this historical ledger, the lineage of its long-standing publishing house began in 1826 when Irish immigrant John Kenedy opened a historic printing operation in Baltimore, later relocating to New York City in 1838. Upon his passing in 1866, his son, Patrick John (P.J.) Kenedy, took stewardship of the firm. Recognizing P.J.'s dedication to precision and clerical service, Pope Leo XIII designated him as an "Official Publisher to the Holy See" in 1895, cementing a deep bond of institutional trust. In the early 20th century, P.J.'s sons, Arthur and Louis Kenedy, assumed leadership of the renamed P.J. Kenedy & Sons.     

As the Catholic population in the United States grew rapidly due to historic immigration waves, the Church faced a massive administrative hurdle: its records were completely fragmented across isolated regional directories. To solve this, P.J. Kenedy & Sons systematically acquired and consolidated these scattered pre-existing regional records—including the lineage dating back to 1817—into a single, unified national registry in 1911. Securing the official blessing of the U.S. Catholic hierarchy, this milestone volume transformed the publication into the undisputed national database, affectionately known by Church officials for decades simply as "The Kenedy Directory". Today, the official P.J. Kenedy & Sons shield proudly displays the 1817 founding mark to honor this continuous, 200-plus-year heritage of authoritative data tracking.

  • Religious Order Registries: Extensive listings tracking the motherhouses, locations, and personnel counts for religious communities of both men and women.

Modern History & The Corporate Era

The mid-20th century marked a profound shift for The Official Catholic Directory, transforming it from a vital administrative reference into an indispensable legal instrument for the entire American Church landscape. On March 25, 1946, the U.S. Department of the Treasury officially issued a landmark group exemption letter to the National Catholic Welfare Conference (the predecessor organization to the modern United States Conference of Catholic Bishops or USCCB). Under this permanent framework—identified by IRS Group Exemption Number (GEN) 0928—the IRS established that any Catholic religious, charitable, or educational organization in the United States must be listed in the current, active edition of The Official Catholic Directory to automatically secure and verify its 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status. This annual reaffirmation cycle binds civil tax law directly to the meticulous data maintenance of the directory, rendering it the supreme legal authority for verifying church non-profit validation, processing donor contributions, and maintaining local diocesan compliance.

As the sheer volume of institutional data expanded to encompass tens of thousands of parishes, schools, hospitals, and cemeteries, the publishing operations scaled to match modern database demands. While widely recognized across generations under its foundational heritage as "The Kenedy Directory," the stewardship and compilation of this massive registry transitioned through premier data management imprints. The directory was produced in close collaboration with major institutional publishing houses, including Reed Elsevier, National Register Publishing, and Marquis Who's Who, ensuring the transition from traditional typesetting to sophisticated digital data aggregation.

The Digital Era & Verifiable Crowdsourcing

Today, The Official Catholic Directory continues its centuries-old mission of structural precision by blending physical tradition with advanced database infrastructure. To maintain the highest standard of data integrity, the directory utilizes a proprietary OCD Online Update System. For nearly a decade, this secure portal has decentralized data collection by allowing individual Catholic entities to directly input and update their official records. Once this local diocesan review window closes, an intensive internal verification phase begins. The specialized OCD Editorial Team takes stewardship of the data, running close to 100 separate diagnostic and analytical reports across the entire national database. This rigorous scrubbing process serves two critical administrative functions: first, it flags and resolves complex institutional tax-exempt status discrepancies directly with diocesan leadership and/or the USCCB's General Counsel's Office; second, it identifies, isolates, and cleanses hidden data formatting inconsistencies or clerical errors. This continuous, multi-tiered vetting cycle ensures the registry remains the flawless, definitive, and legally binding record for the entire American Church landscape.
